TRAINED IN CANADA 2026

June 2-3, 2026
Montreal, QC

Enhancing Training and Education in Professional Psychology Graduate Programs

In lieu of the "usual" CCPPP 1/2 day workshop, in 2026 we are going bigger! Join us for 1.5 days of keynote talks, breakout sessions, the CCPPP AGM and town hall, and more.

June 2: 4 p.m. - 730 p.m.

June 3: 9 a.m. - 230 p.m.

(AGM AND TOWNHALL FOR CCPPP TO FOLLOW 3-6PM)

We are also going for a bigger audience - this event is designed for anyone involved in training the next generation of psychologists. The ideal conference attendee is invested in delivering high quality, socially responsive training to professional graduate psychology students and that includes supervisors, academic faculty, practicum and residency psychology supervisors, Directors of Clinical Training, and Training Directors.

We encourage our CCPPP "usual attendees" to think of at least one colleague you could invite, or share this information with. This is an event not to be missed!

Trained in Canada keynotes and workshops will be reviewed for CE approval by the Canadian Psychological Association. Attendees of approved keynotes and workshops will be eligible to receive CE credits.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Dr. Steven R. Shaw, McGill University

"Improving the credibility of clinical practice in an era of anti-science, cynicism, and AI"

Psychologists are experts and professionals in an era when society is experiencing the “death of expertise” and the legitimacy of all professionals is being challenged. Although there are societal pressures; professional psychologists have responsibility for adjusting training, research, and clinical practice to maximize credibility for consumers and policy makers. A step-by-step approach to increasing credibility is provided, including evolving approaches to evidence-based interventions, reconsidering ethics, transparency, and integration of artificial intelligence into clinical practice.

Steven R. Shaw has been a school psychologist for 35 years after graduating from the University of Florida (MEd and EdS 1988; PhD 1991). The first 16 years were in service to children and families through clinical practice. For 9 of those years, Steve was the lead psychologist and associate professor of medicine at The Children’s Hospital in Greenville, SC, US. The second 20 years have been as academic staff member, including stints as program director and department chair at McGill University. His current research involves improving the credibility and relevance of research for theory and practice. He is former editor of School Psychology Forum and the Canadian Journal of School Psychology; and frequent CPA accreditation site visitor. His professional focus continues to be expanding the capacity of educational and school psychologists to provide mental health and academic supports to all children in Canada. He is currently writing the book, "Credible Consultation."

Dr. Ryan L. Farmer, The University of Memphis

"The Assisted Mind: AI, Competency, and the Future of Graduate Training"

As AI becomes woven into graduate education and clinical training, programs face new questions about competence, ethics, and the development of professional judgment. This keynote will outline where AI is currently influencing student learning and clinical work, drawing on recent data about how trainees use these tools. The focus will be on what programs can do now to support competency development in an evolving landscape, including guidance for documentation, assessment, supervision, and classroom teaching. The aim is to offer clear, usable direction without overstating what AI can or cannot do.

Ryan L. Farmer, PhD, is Director of the Psychological Services Center and Director of the MA/EDS School Psychology program at the University of Memphis. His research focuses on identifying low-value practices in school and clinical psychology, promoting evidence-based assessment, and examining how innovations affect training and practice. Recently, Dr. Farmer has investigated how artificial intelligence is being integrated into psychologists’ work, including report writing, documentation, and decision-making, and is helping to shape ethical guidelines for emerging clinicians facing a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
